Starting Monday, Sept. 13, Matthews and Davidson branch libraries will be open one additional day per week for six hours, due to an enhanced staff-led volunteer program and enthusiastic support from the town leaders of Matthews and Davidson.

In two weeks the largest Labor Day Festival in the Southeast will be underway in Downtown Matthews. The event includes lots of fun, music, arts, crafts and much more. One of the best kept secrets of the festival is that behind the scenes there are hundreds of volunteers who make the festival one of the best in the region. These volunteers work at the festival for two reasons – they love Matthews and the non-profits they represent will share in the profits of the festival. The non-profits commit to working various areas of the festival from Friday to Monday.
Matthews Town Hall will be closed Monday, September 6, 2010. Town Hall will reopen on Tuesday, September 7.
Crews Recreation Center and the Matthews Community Center will be open.
Allied Waste will not collect garbage and recycling on Labor Day. They will operate on a one day delayed schedule.
A new garbage/recycling collection schedule for the Town of Matthews will begin September 13, 2010. Approximately 26% or 2,400 households and businesses will have a change in their schedule. There are a total of nearly 9,000 garbage collection points in Matthews. Only those customers whose route will change will receive a letter from the Town informing them of their new collection day. The letters will be mailed this week. Additional reminders will be attached to garbage containers for the next two weeks. Residents will not receive new garbage carts or bins. You should use the carts and bins you have now.
The N.C. Department of Transportation wants to know how you think money generated by the state’s new Mobility Fund should be spent. Sharing your ideas is as easy as turning on your computer or picking up your smartphone. You can even do it in your pajamas.
Local artist, Nancy Carter, has brought this year’s Matthews Alive theme to life. The 2010 Matthews Alive theme is Volunteer Matthews. Each year the Matthews Alive Board of Directors holds a contest for area artists encouraging artists to bring the theme of the festival to life. Nancy Carter’s artwork has won the 2010 competition.
Over 60 volunteers are now trained and working in the Matthews Branch of the Library. The volunteers come from all walks of life. They are all ages from teenagers to senior citizens and they have varying backgrounds. They are teachers, engineers, students, and information technology specialists. The one thing they all have in common is a love for reading, knowledge and the public library.
After serving as a firefighter and paramedic for over 30 years Matthews Fire and EMS Chief Trim Sawtelle has announced his retirement. He will retire in December. Deputy Chief Dennis Green will serve as interim chief of the department. The hiring process for a new chief will begin in 2011.
The Mecklenburg County Tax Collector will mail tax bills to approximately 379,300 property owners and mortgage companies on August 25, 2010.
Many people have commented on the beautiful planters and hanging baskets in Downtown Matthews and have asked for the names of the plants. Below is a listing of the plants that are in the planters and hanging baskets this summer. This is the 10th year the Town has had the planters and the 4th year we have installed the baskets. The Matthews Kiwanis Club will sponsor a 5K Run and Family Fun Run during Matthews Alive on Monday, September 6, at Stumptown Park. This is the 20th anniversary of the event. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and the Family Fun Run starts at 8:45 a.m.

“We have 18 Twitter feeds that instantly update citizens on real-time travel conditions, as well as changes to our ferry schedules,” said Lisa Schell, the N.C. Department of Transportation’s new media coordinator. “In an emergency, we’ll immediately send out tweets alerting the affected areas about road closures, flooding, dangerous driving conditions and evacuation routes.”
From 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, September 5, area churches will participate in the annual Matthews Alive Community Choir Sing. The event will be held on the Main Stage located in Stumptown Park.
Churches, participating this year in the event, are: Mt. Moriah, Abundant Life, Carmel Baptist Church, Christ Covenant Church, Graceway Church and Matthews Presbyterian Church.

Starting today, citizens can help the N.C. Department of Transportation decide how to choose which projects will receive funding from the state’s Mobility Fund, which generates new dollars for transportation projects of statewide or regional significance. NCDOT will use their ideas to establish a formal project selection process.

It's America's Night Out Against Crime! The 27th Annual National Night Out (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event will be celebrated Tuesday, August 3. Four neighborhoods in Matthews are participating in the event this year: The Village at St. Andrews, Hampton Green, Windrow, and Elizabeth Place.
The Matthews Branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has succeeded in attracting scores of applications the past month in order to bolster the volunteer team at the library. Applications are currently being screened and interviews scheduled with prospective volunteers. New library volunteers will begin training in the coming weeks and be requested to attend a mandatory orientation session on either Monday, August 16 from 4-6 p.m. or on Thursday, August 19 from 10 a.m.-noon.
The Town of Matthews Planning Department is reviewing downtown parking - particularly along Matthews Station Street. The Planning Department presented an analysis of parking to the Town Board on July 12. Staff will also meet with downtown business owners to discuss the issue.

The Town of Matthews’ Tourism Grant Application process is underway. Grants will be given to organizations who meet strict legal guidelines in regards to attracting tourism to the Town.
We encourage you and your family to recycle. As a partner with Mecklenburg County resident of Matthews can now recycle additional items. Recycling should be put in your recycling bins and placed at the curb on your scheduled garbage day. At this time Matthews is not making the switch to rollout recycling containers. Only the City of Charlotte and Huntersville are implementing these new recycling containers.

Railroad work at the Ames Street crossing continues. Equipment malfunctioning has delayed the work. The work is now expected to be completed late Thursday, July 8.
The N.C. Department of Transportation will put funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to work to improve the intersections of N.C. 51 (Pineville-Matthews Road) at Fullwood Lane and Monroe Road in Matthews beginning Monday, July 12, weather permitting.

The Heathers Subdivision will be repaved this summer. Beginning the last week of June work will begin in the subdivision. Work to be completed includes curb repair, the addition of handicap ramps and milling and paving of all three miles of streets in the subdivision.

Construction continues for the Four Mile Creek Greenway. The contractor continues boardwalk construction, stone sub-base placement, and the installation of several small swale bridges. Asphalt paving should begin within the next two weeks. Centerline staking has been placed and proposed trail alignment is under review between the old town maintenance building and Four Mile Creek. Please remember that this is a construction zone and is not yet open to the public.

The Matthews Town Board of Commissioners has approved an agreement with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Library System that will result in the Matthews Branch remaining open. They voted unanimously on the agreement during a special meeting held tonight.

Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on Tuesday adopted a $1.35 billion annual budget that does not increase the property tax rate, but does include a rate increase for police services to the County residents living outside a city or town jurisdiction.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents will open mailboxes next week to find the Water Quality Report, which summarizes the quality of our community’s tap water in calendar year 2009. Charlotte’s drinking water once again meets and exceeds all drinking water standards, and Utilities had no water quality violations.
Mecklenburg County government offices and agencies will be closed on Monday, May 31, for Memorial Day and open on a normal schedule Tuesday, June 1.
N. Trade St. in Matthews will be closed from 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. beginning Sunday night, May 24 thru Thursday morning, May 27. Work will be done on the crosswalks, speed tables and pavement markings.
This is the final phase of the N. Trade Street improvements that have been underway this Spring. The closure will occur from the intersection of John St. to Matthews Station Street.
The Matthews Alive Board of Directors has announced their annual Call for Artists for what will become the official art piece for the Matthews Alive Festival in 2010. The selected artwork will adorn the festival’s posters, t-shirts, event guides, and will even serve as the cover for the festival’s special promotional section.

Courtney Pruitt and Travis Ernsberger have completed the Fire Academy at Cleveland Community College where they earned Firefighter I and II certification. The Town of Matthews Fire & EMS Department has donated approximately 30 self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to the Port-au-Prince Rotary Club of Haiti. The equipment is used by firefighters to breathe during hazardous situations.
