The Matthews Branch of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library has succeeded in attracting scores of applications the past month in order to bolster the volunteer team at the library. Applications are currently being screened and interviews scheduled with prospective volunteers. New library volunteers will begin training in the coming weeks and be requested to attend a mandatory orientation session on either Monday, August 16 from 4-6 p.m. or on Thursday, August 19 from 10 a.m.-noon.

The Town of Matthews Planning Department is reviewing downtown parking - particularly along Matthews Station Street. The Planning Department presented an analysis of parking to the Town Board on July 12. Staff will also meet with downtown business owners to discuss the issue.

Recycling should be put in your recycling bins and placed at the curb on your scheduled garbage day. At this time Matthews is not making the switch to rollout recycling containers. Celebrate the 4th of July in Matthews on Saturday, July 3. Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. in front of Town Hall as everyone gathers to decorate their bicycles, scooters or wagons with free patriotic items provided by the Matthews Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department.

Then join us for the People's Parade at 6 p.m. The parade route is from Town Hall to Stumptown Park. Games and activities are from 6:30-7 p.m.

End the night with “Too Much Sylvia” who will perform a free concert in Stumptown Park at 7 p.m.

This event is co-sponsored by the Arts & Science Council.

The Heathers Subdivision will be repaved this summer. Beginning the last week of June work will begin in the subdivision. Work to be completed includes curb repair, the addition of handicap ramps and milling and paving of all three miles of streets in the subdivision.

Construction continues for the Four Mile Creek Greenway. The contractor continues boardwalk construction, stone sub-base placement, and the installation of several small swale bridges. Asphalt paving should begin within the next two weeks. Centerline staking has been placed and proposed trail alignment is under review between the old town maintenance building and Four Mile Creek. Please remember that this is a construction zone and is not yet open to the public.

Milling and Paving of N. Trade Street is now underway. The work will be done at night to minimize impacts on traffic. Over 10,000 vehicles use N. Trade Street daily.

Courtney Pruitt and Travis Ernsberger have completed the Fire Academy at Cleveland Community College where they earned Firefighter I and II certification. The academy involved residing at area fire stations for two months of extensive training. Pruitt and Ernsberger are volunteer firefighters with the Town of Matthews Fire & EMS Department.
