Chief of Police - Rob Hunter, who joined the Police Department in August of 1987 as a patrol officer, was selected as the town's Police Chief in 1993. He has witnessed Matthews grow from a small town of about 5,000 to a thriving community of more than 28,000 residents. During his tenure, the police department has also grown - from 17 full-time employees in 1993 to a current staff of more than eighty full and part-time employees.

Captain, Patrol Division - Carla Thompson has a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice from Andrew Jackson University. She is a graduate of the Southeastern Command and Leadership Academy (formerly the Tennessee Command and Leadership Academy) and a graduate of the Law Enforcement Executive Program at North Carolina State University.

Captain, Criminal Investigations Division - David Dufresne has over 15 years experience in Law Enforcement. He started his career with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office in 1994. In 1997, he changed agencies and began working as a Patrol Officer with the Matthews Police Department. Capt. Dufresne has worked as a Patrol Officer, Criminal Investigator, Patrol Sergeant, Patrol Division Commander, is currently the Criminal Investigations Division Commander and Tactical Commander of the Special Response Team. He is certified as a NC law enforcement general instructor, and a specialized instructor in Firearms, Subject Control/Arrest Techniques, Ground Fighting, Rapid Deployment and Taser. Captain Dufresne has a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science Degree in Leadership and Organizational Change, both from Pfeiffer University.

Contact Captain Amos
Captain, Support Services Division - Garland Amos began his law enforcement career with the High Point, NC Police Department in October of 1972. He has experience in private corporate security and administering polygraph examinations. In 1992 he began working for the Matthews Police Department and has served an Officer, Sergeant, and Captain in the patrol division. Capt. Amos is currently the Division Commander for Support Services. He is responsible for the daily operations of the communications section, training, school resource, community relations and crime prevention, DARE, animal control and vehicle fleet management.
