N.C. State Emergency Management has requested help from any law enforcement agencies that could send staff to assist during recovery efforts from Hurricane Florence.  There is a tremendous need in some of the hardest hit counties in eastern North Carolina as they are still battling flooding and power outages in many areas.  Chief Pennington and the MPD staff decided that assistance needed to be provided in any way that could help in this effort.  "Signing up to help during these times was an easy decision for us to make, especially when we realized how blessed we were to have avoided this disaster in our area."

Four Matthews’s officers left this morning headed to Fair Bluff, NC to assist their local police department during their recovery.  Fair Bluff is a small community in Columbus County that is still dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Matthew from two years ago.  We have a total of 18 officers that will travel to the Fair Bluff area in groups of three to four officers at a time and rotate out every two to three days.  They are going primarily on their scheduled days off so this will not have an impact on our daily staffing.

The town of Matthews has received an assigned FEMA number for reimbursement regarding compensation for officer’s services through the disaster assistance program.  Matthews’s officers will be supported by their Mobile Operations Unit for communications and to have a place to take breaks as well re-issue needed supplies and equipment.  Everything needed by officers will be taken there to be as self-sustaining as possible.  The Matthews Police Department is thankful to be in this position to be able to send any help available their way.

Matthews Police would like to thank the local Harris Teeter and Costco for providing gift cards when they found out about these efforts.  These cards were used to purchase food and supplies for the officers that are going to help.
