On Saturday, September 22, 2018, at approximately 9:45 p.m., officers with the Matthews Police Department responded to the 11300 block of E. Independence Blvd. regarding a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.  When officers arrived, they observed an unresponsive male laying in the median. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Medic. An investigation was conducted by members of the Matthews Police Department Accident Reconstruction Team and it was determined that the pedestrian was attempting to cross E. Independence Blvd. from the westbound travel lane and was struck by a vehicle traveling West on E. Independence Blvd.  The driver remained on scene and was cooperative during the course of the investigation. The pedestrian was later identified as Mr. Matthew Mayfield (DOB 05/02/1977) of Lexington, SC. After consultation with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, it was decided that the driver of the vehicle would not be charged in this case.

We ask anyone that is walking or running near roadways to please dress is bright clothing and/or wear some type of reflective product(s) especially at night and to always comply with marked crosswalks for your safety.  Please go to the attached link and learn more about proper safety tips for pedestrians.
