Unfortunately, we all know someone that has been affected by breast cancer in some way.  This terrible disease does not discriminate against anyone even being inclusive of men.  About 1 in 8 U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer in her lifetime and there is a chance that about 1 in 1,000 men will during their lifetime as well.  Awareness along with early detection through regular checkups is more important than ever in fighting and curing this disease.

The Matthews Police Department is planning to do their part in helping to bring awareness to this issue.  During the month of October, which is the nationally recognized month of awareness, Matthews Police Chief Clark Pennington has approved a department designed pink undershirt for officers to wear while in uniform.  These same shirts are also now available to the public for purchase with proceeds going to the Novant Health Mobile Mammography Unit.

“Screening mammography is essential for early detection of breast cancer. We are proud to partner with the Matthews Police Department to raise awareness of and increase access to life-saving mammography services,” said Roland Bibeau, president of Novant Health Matthews Medical Center. “Many women who are diagnosed have no known risk factors. Screening mammography recommended annually starting at age 40, or younger if you are at high risk, is the best tool we have for early detection.”
