The Matthews Police Department is excited to announce the creation of its very first Motor Unit. This unit will consist of three motorcycles, two Harley Davidson’s and an all-electric ZERO motorcycle. The Motor Unit officers will be assigned to the Patrol Division with duties to include: traffic enforcement, traffic crash investigation, traffic control, and special escorts.
“I thought it was a good time to add another set of tools for our officers to be successful in keeping citizens safe. As everyone knows, we have a lot of traffic coming through Matthews every day, and with that brings a higher number of traffic crashes. The reduction of traffic crashes is something that we are highly focused on right now, and having the opportunity to utilize the mobility and quick response capabilities of these motor units, will be invaluable in our efforts to get those crash numbers down.” Matthews Police Chief Clark A. Pennington said.
The two Harley Davidson motorcycles are already out on patrol while the new all-electric ZERO motorcycle is expected to be on the road in early 2019.
