Stevens Creek Nature Preserve Sub-Area Study: Bicycle & Pedestrian Access
The Town of Matthews is undertaking a small area study to examine ways to enhance access to Stevens Creek Nature Preserve for residents of Matthews and visitors. Stevens Creek Nature Preserve is a 281 acre site, located at 15700 Thompson Road in Mint Hill. The landscape consists mostly of mixed pine and mixed pine hardwoods that were planted or originated within the last 50 years. Once completed, the site will also feature a Nature Center, hiking trails, picnic areas, outdoor classrooms, and other low impact outdoor recreational opportunities.
The sub-area plan, developed by the Town of Matthews and VHB Consultant team, will focus on opportunities for bicyclist and pedestrians in Matthews to access the nature preserve, primarily through connections to existing greenway, sidewalk and bikeway facilities.
Please take a moment and share your opinion about access to Stevens Creek Nature Preserve by participating in a brief citizen survey.

Rice Park is open and ready for everyone to enjoy! The park is located at 2540 Rice Road. Impressive natural areas and huge trees are features on this 10 acre park. A gravel surface walking trail, playground and picnic areas are also part of this awesome new park.
The Rice Road area of Matthews was identified in the Parks and Recreation Facility Master Plan, as an area underserved in terms of park facilities. The site is nestled among residential neighborhoods and has significant bike and pedestrian activity.

Carolina Thread Trail
The Carolina Thread Trail is a regional network of trails, or “threads”, which will ultimately link 15 counties in North and South Carolina. These threads are composed of local trails and greenways which, while maintaining their local identities, will grow to form a "green interstate" offering trail-users access to regional attractions. “The Thread” will continue to evolve over time, linking parks, green spaces, and cultural destinations throughout the region. The goal of the Matthews Study is to identify trail corridors, routes, and segments which will establish connectivity with The Thread and locally-based greenways, and meet the desires of the Matthews community.
