Town of Matthews Announces Public Comment Period on Extension of Independence Pointe Parkway

Thursday, May 25, 2017

Matthews, NC – The Town of Matthews will hold a 30-day public comment period from May 25 to June 25 on the future extension alignment for Independence Pointe Parkway between its current end near Matthews-Mint Hill Road to a future terminus point beyond I-485.  The purpose of this comment period is to hear concerns and suggestions about where Independence Pointe Parkway should be located as it is extended toward the Sportsplex and across I-485, ultimately connecting to a future extension of McKee Road.

The Town of Matthews sought approval of the current proposed location for this future roadway in 1998.  Since then many changes and actions have occurred that make that adopted alignment less than ideal.

The Town therefore requested assistance from transportation engineering staff with Charlotte Area Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) to design alternate potential routes for this future roadway.  They have provided the Town three possible alignments.

Before the Town makes a decision on a preferred alignment, the Town is holding this public comment opportunity, which is part of the required process for amending a CRTPO document.

Comments may be made in two ways:

  • Written comments can be sent to Town Hall, care of the Planning Department, at 232 Matthews Station St, Matthews NC 28105.
  • Verbal comments can be offered to the Town Board of Commissioners at their June 12 meeting at 7PM at Town Hall.

All written comments will be posted to the Town website so they can be viewed by Town Board and the public.  The Town Board can determine a preferred alignment at their June 26 meeting.  This information will be sent to CRTPO so that the new alignment can be adopted into the region's Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP).
