What We Do: The Administrative Division is responsible for managing the areas of: recruitment, background investigations, field training, staff development, and internal affairs. Our goal as an agency is to not only hire the best candidates possible, but to give them every opportunity and tools possible to ensure that they succeed in this chosen career with proper training, education and support. This Division also supports the mission of the Police Department through many other areas of responsibility which include such services as School Resource and DARE programs, Community Safety Programs, the Reserve Officer Program and Off-Duty Employment coordination.
Staff Development: We provide a full-time police officer who serves as the department's Training Officer. He and his sergeant coordinate all employee training & education programs, manage all of the department's training records, and serve as a liaison with our department's state-certified instructors, all of whom serve in various areas of the department. In addition to the eighteen-week Basic Law Enforcement Program, all officers must complete, each officer must successfully complete the more than 50 annual training hours, though many far exceed that number of hours each year.
Captain David Dufresne - David started his law enforcement career with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office in 1994. Since joining the Matthews Police Department in 1997, he has served as a Patrol Officer, Sergeant in both the Patrol & Criminal Investigations Divisions, and Division Commander in the Criminal Investigations, Patrol Division, and Support Services Division. He has attained a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science Degree in Leadership and Organizational Change and is a graduate of Session 251 FBI National Academy.
