Covid-19 Response

The Town of Matthews has been working closely with our local, state and federal partners to respond to the Covid-19 crisis. As this is a rapidly changing situation, the Town will continue to assess how to best meet the needs of our community while following expert advice from our partners in emergency management.

Mecklenburg County issued a Stay at Home Order effective March 26. The county transitioned to the North Carolina Order effective April 30 through May 8. Click here to read more.

Resources for Businesses

Phase 2 Toolkit for Businesses: A new toolkit from Mecklenburg County is now available with resources for local businesses to help as they begin to reopen. It includes printable signs, general safety guidelines and more »

In response to the local economic impact of the current health crisis, Mecklenburg County has created a COVID-19 Small Business Emergency Stabilization Loan Fund and a Microbusiness Stabilization Fund. The funds were created through the County's partnerships with Carolina Small Business Development Fund and Centralina Council of Governments.

The Matthews Chamber of Commerce has a dedicated  Resources webpage available to everyone, not just their members.

The Small Business Administration has several loan and debt relief programs available for businesses including the Economic Injury Disaster Loans (see below). Please visit their website to learn more: and contact the local office of the SBA here:

Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs)
The SBA has approved the North Carolina Governor’s request for a disaster declaration, and you may begin the application process.  Applicants are strongly encouraged to use the online SBA application.  Alternatively, applicants may complete a  hard copy SBA application and mail it to SBA, though that will take longer to process.  There are no disaster loan centers established for this disaster declaration.

Yard Waste Pickup to Resume Monday April 20

Republic Services has informed the Town of Matthews that yard waste pickup will resume beginning Monday, April 20 and will be operating on a normal schedule.

Please be patient as pickup resumes. It is expected to take some time for workers to catch up.

Thank you for your cooperation during the suspension of yard waste pickup. Yard waste pickup is a two-person, hands-on operation and the safety of employees is a top priority. Republic Services will continue to monitor the situation with Covid-19 and reevaluate if necessary. 

Bulk Item Pickup Resume Monday May 11
Bulk item pickup will resume on Monday, May 11. It is not necessary to call to request a pickup during this week. 

Beginning Monday, May 18, residents must call 704-393-6900 to request a bulk pickup within at least 24 hours of their regular service day. This pickup will occur on your regular trash pickup day. 

A reminder that bulk item pickup as an on-call service is pursuant to the Town's contract with Republic Services.
